Review of Donuts and other Proclamations of Love

Donuts and Other Proclamations of Love by Jared Reck

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh Yay, I’m honored to review Donuts and Other Proclamations of Love. Who can pass-up donuts and Poutine? Not me.

It’s been along time since a book made me hungry, laugh out loud and sob until my chest hurt; Maybe the reminder of my mother’s passing. Jared Reck’s story of high schooler Oscar Olsson, brought up by his Swedish grandpa, FarFar, started slow for me. Some hint of flavor always drew me back to the story. I love food reminders in the middle of life’s happenings.
Working with FarFar in a food truck making munkar and rullebebab became Oscar’s future dream.
Then enters Mary Luoise Messinger (Lou for short) all full of higher education aspirations to remind Oscar of his distaste of anything to do with school.
High energy Lou commandeers Oscar to share her ambitious over the top idea of curbing food waste in the form of Central Adams High School’s mountains of bitter apples. Weeks devoted to making multiple dozens of apple muffins, donuts, pies, crisps, etc. nearing school graduation… until tragedy falls.
Please read Donuts and other… to find out how the story ends. I’m curtain you will feel satisfied and in need of a good Swedish munkar (donut).
